la-chanh

quote La Chanh is another solid Vietnamese spot along Victoria Street with a wide range of dishes. We tried the pho and the vermicelli bowl. The pho had a light, delicious beef stock with chicken — no heavy MSG or oily feel like some other spots on the street. The noodles were okay in texture, and the chicken was cooked nicely. The vermicelli bowl was refreshing, and the chicken was cooked well. We also added a side of pork, which I felt could’ve been slightly more charred to get that smoky flavour that many places do. Overall, a decent experience and another good option along Victoria Street.

quote I found this little gem without any expectations. It felt like walking into someone's house who is keen to cook for me. The elderly man was most likely the owner who seemed like a humble human being with culinary skill. He helped us order and we were rapt with the dishes. The lamb ding ding noodles was just filling and flavourful. I surely want to try the other dishes next time and on top of that he was kind enough to let me try the Yoghurt drink for free! I just couldn't thank him enough for the hospitality.

quote January 2026: I am a Level 8 contributor (>450 reviews) on Google and provide an unbiased feedback on eateries and experiences both in Asia and Melbourne. I was here in January to check out the Penang white curry noodles. As others have pointed out, the broth is quite diluted in taste compared to versions in Singapore and Malaysia. However, it still tasted good. The portion of noodles was generous. There were also 🐖 blood cubes and canned cockles. The latter was very chewy. Some MSG in the soup because I felt thirsty hours later. *Pork noodles soup* Delicious and there was no MSG in the soup. The pork slices were tenderised well and the minced pork balls were well marinated. They had a subtle flavour. I paid $10 in Feb 2026. *FIRST REVIEW (Below)* This is a small restaurant in Chinatown on Little Bourke Street between Russell and Exhibition Streets. The nearest train station is Parliament. The seating arrangement feels cramped but I was here for the food. I have a craving for fish🐟 fillet noodle soup and I paid $17.50. It was a huge portion, with 6 big pieces of fried fish. The fish tasted like basa, instead of rockling. The soup has a light creamy texture because of the addition of evaporated milk. I didn't taste MSG in the soup. There were also 2 sour plums which tasted very sour. The ginger was coarsely cut. Overall, I like the taste but would have preferred thin slices of ginger. Taste wise, it's on par with Laksa King's fish noodle soup, but cheaper. A surcharge applies in weekends and public holidays, waived upon cash payments. I waited quite a while for my dush to come even though I ordered before 5 pm on a week day. They have too many online orders. I came back days later on a Sunday to try the Hainanese chicken🐔 rice and rice rolls with sweet sauce. Each dish costs $10, on cash payment. There were many here who raved about the chicken rice. My opinion: the chicken pieces were not as tender as other venues because the ones that were served to me came from the thighs. I still prefer the Hainanese chicken rice at Kakilang. The rice was fragrant and delicious. At $10, this is a satisfying meal with generous portions. The rice rolls were delicious too with fish🐟 cake slices and 2 fish 🐟balls.

quote Solid value, generous portions, with room for small improvements I had a really enjoyable meal at Nan Yang Express Hawthorn. I especially liked the braised pork trotter rice, which was rich and comforting, as well as the fish fillet thin noodles, clean in flavour and very satisfying. The portion sizes are generous, and with most dishes sitting around $20 per person, this place strikes a very reasonable balance between value for money and taste. It’s not flashy food, but it’s honest, filling, and well executed. The food was served very quickly, which was a big plus — though this may also be because we were among the first customers to arrive. That said, there is some room for improvement in the dining experience. I had to spend a bit of time finding the menu, as no one introduced the ordering process, and cutlery was self-serve in a designated area, which wasn’t explained either. Once you know the system it’s fine, but clearer guidance would make the first visit smoother. Overall, still a solid and affordable option, and definitely worth a try, especially if you enjoy comforting, no-nonsense meals.

quote Simply splendid. The shredded chicken noodle soup is my favourite here. Absolutely incredible! The value for money is also exceptional given the volume of food and variety of ingredients. For under $20, I always leave here feeling so completely full and satiated that I can comically slap on my near-bursting belly with a hearty chuckle. Their soup base is superbly divine, I'd say the best dishes here are the pho and chef specials. The rice paper rolls are also delightful. The freshness of any vegetable and salad ingredients has also been very consistent, the basil has typically been rather fragrant, the beansprouts are well-washed and crisp, the onions have clean, tender snaps etc. and I've not yet had a bad meal here. Bloody brilliant. The staff are also super friendly and are very accommodating, especially to those who may be new to this type of cuisine. Please be patient when things get busy, the food is well worth the wait and the staff are doing their best. As a regular customer here for over 5~ years now, the quality of food in my typical order has remained outstanding. The dine-in and takeaway experience for their pho is almost identical too, which is a huge plus, and I have supplied an image of both experiences. Thank you again for the great food!
